To deceive Yourself

I consider it to be an art to suckup, to kiss ass, to deceive Yourself.
When you’re basically going out of your ways to get to something you want, do you not stop and think afterwards that you just sold out? Is it often worth it? I think not.
It sure is an easy way to get to places, maybe that shiny promotion you think you deserve, maybe you want that brand new Iphone 4S (yes, you do want it!).
Why do I think it’s not needed to suck up for the stuff you do want?
It will come through HARD WORK. It is that easy (no pun intended). Do people not realize they are making themselves look like asses when they go out of their ways, manipulatively
getting their urges fulfilled, and ultimately hurting themselves in the long run? Deceit will not win you anything, especially not confidence nor self esteem.
The right way to do it is to work HARD, and EARN what you want! It is sad to see people have forgotten that hard work gets you what you want. It will not be served for you.

Can sycophancy not be seen as hard work? It might get tiring after a while… xD
On a serious note, I think people don’t work with their full efforts out of their fear of failure. Working hard takes time, if that time doesn’t pay off then all that time is well… Wasted.

Good point, fear of failure is rather common. To be honest i get that sometimes myself. But the thing is, if you have some confidence to actually do it, then you can tell yourself that you tried, and you did your best? If it fails that is.
I think it is important to push yourself through fears.
OK so I am an artist. . . and cringe at having just used that word to describe myself. . .because everyone knows that artists don’t work. ..and they deserve to be paid peanuts when their MFA’s get them adjunct teaching jobs with no benefits. .. and YET have been known to stay up for days at a time working on creative stuff, including lecture notes and class preps. . .and then crash from the insanity of working too hard. There has gotta be a middle ground somewhere. 🙂
I see what you’re saying, the middle ground has to be (i guess), that no-one else but You do Your art? 😀
I don’t really think you could suckup to someone and make them paint out your vision, is what I am trying to say 🙂

Sometimes I work hard. Sometimes I suck up. Whatever works. If I’m doing it to save time, effort and energy I can later marshal for use in activities I care more about, then I don’t think twice about kissing ass. It’s not as if most people get to earn money “following their passion” after all. Working SMART is more important than working hard.

I think a blend of those two would be optimal. In the case that people don’t get to earn a living through their passion, would you agree that it is the lack of hard work in say a smart way, that is lacking? Are you going to get there only through being smart?
I would agree, but partly because I agree with you that hard work is in itself virtuous. There are however plenty of slick characters in the finance and public sector who get ahead, WAY ahead, by working smart, and making their underlings do all the hard work. I’ve had the misfortune to be under the yoke of some. That’s a key objection underlying the Occupy movement – undeserved wealth that is NOT earned, in the sense you write about.

Must say that I’ve had the same misfortune once, to be under the regime of a slick character. Then again, could you really do it differently? Without losing credability within your sector for example?
